This course provides participants with a range of knowledge and skills needed
to perform the following functions associated with the role of
groom/strapper/senior groom for performance horses:
- handle, feed, exercise, groom and care for horses
- work with a wide variety of horses of different sizes, features and
- work within workplace procedures and codes of practice within designated
- communicate effectively with supervisors and team members alike
- be capable of administering first aid to humans and to horses.
Part of this qualification is delivered online and at work placement.

If during or after your enrolment, the course in which you are enrolled is updated in line with national industry standards, the Institute reserves the right to transition you into an alternate course. If this becomes necessary, the Institute will advise you of the change and the arrangements which will be available for you to complete your alternate course.
There are no entry requirments for this course.
Credit (or recognition) for modules/units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences. Please discuss this with the teaching section when you enrol.

||Determine nutritional requirements for horses
||Lunge performance horses for exercise
||Carry out mare mating or artificial insemination procedures
||Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices
||Assess suitability of horses for stock work
||Contribute to WHS processes
||Apply first aid for horses
||Prevent and treat equine injury and disease
||Provide first aid
||Demonstrate basic horse riding skills
||Plan and construct an electric fence
||Care for performance horses
||Monitor and review biosecurity measures
||Prepare animals for parturition
||Maintain the health and welfare of performance horses
The above list includes units being offered at this campus and that are required to complete this qualification. Other colleges may offer different elective options. For some courses the electives will not be listed however they will be discussed during your first class. Smart and Skilled Student Fees
The cost of this course will vary based on your eligibility for a Smart and Skilled Student Fee. Eligibility criteria can be found on the Smart and Skilled website or you can call us on 131 870 for further information and advice.
|Non-government subsidised fee||$9,220|
Trainees: From 2016 if you are starting a traineeship that is on the NSW Skills List, your Smart and Skilled fee for the whole qualification will not be more than $1,000.
When enrolling under a Smart and Skilled entitlement and where you are eligible for 100% credit from previous studies, your student fee contribution will be zero. However, you will be required to pay an administration fee for the production of your testamur.
